Major Improvements for Frankston Line as Kananook Yard Expands
26.06.2025
The Frankston Line is receiving a major infrastructure boost with a new train wash and expanded stabling yard, preparing services for the Metro Tunnel and improving operational efficiency. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

A modern wash facility at the Kananook Train Stabling Yard is now complete and will officially open next month. Train drivers are currently undergoing training to begin using the system.

Expanded Facilities to Support Frankston Line Operations
The wash will allow trains to stay on the Frankston Line while being cleaned, reducing delays and eliminating unnecessary transfers to other facilities. This ensures faster, more consistent service for commuters.
In addition to the wash, the stabling yard’s train capacity has jumped from eight to 21. A new maintenance facility is now in place, and a dedicated connection to the Frankston Line has been installed to simplify train access.
The first stage of the Kananook upgrade was delivered in 2020 under the Carrum level crossing removal project. Since then, the site has grown steadily, adding a signal control center and better driver amenities in 2022.
New Infrastructure on Frankston Line to Boost Jobs and Access
Currently, 36 staff work at the site. Once the full expansion opens later this year, the workforce will grow to over 100, including more than 50 new jobs.
A Victorian Government spokesperson emphasized the project’s timing, noting that upgrades to the Frankston Line will support the return of services to the City Loop when the Metro Tunnel opens.
By 2029, the entire Frankston Line corridor will be level crossing free, enhancing safety and reducing congestion for passengers and road users alike.
