Lithuanian Minister of Economy and Innovation Aušryne Armonaitė said that the Lithuanian government could help Ukraine export grain by rail after Poland temporarily banned grain imports from Ukraine. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to URM.

The port of Klaipeda and Lietuvos Geležinkeliai can play an important role in resolving the current situation and guaranteeing the export of grain outside the European Union. Lithuania can help export up to 1 million tons of grain by rail from Ukraine. This would be a real solution for Ukraine and help for Poland.

The tragic balance of the train disaster in Greece is growing

Last May, Lietuvos Geležinkeliai began transporting small batches of Ukrainian grain through Poland to the port of Klaipeda. The main problem is still different gauges: Ukraine and Lithuania still use a wide gauge, while Poland uses a European one.

On April 15, Poland banned the import of Ukrainian agricultural products until June 30. Hungary and Slovakia have joined Poland, and Bulgaria may soon join them. In response, the European Commission recalled that trade policy is within its competence and the EU countries cannot independently make decisions on this matter. Grain exported by Ukraine is being transported to other countries through the EU, as the Russian Federation, which launched the invasion of Ukraine, blocked the traditional Black Sea export routes for Ukrainian grain. However, due to logistical obstacles in transit countries, a lot of Ukrainian grain has accumulated. It is cheaper than grown in the EU, and this has hit local farmers.
