Lithuania Puts Narrow-Gauge Railway Up for Auction
23.09.2023
An unusual cultural heritage object is up for auction in Lithuania – not just a bridge over the Sanžilė River (Panevėžys District), but also 13 objects related to a narrow-gauge railway, including the Pasvalys station, according to the Railway Supply journal, citing Delfi
The starting price for the 80 km-long tracks is nearly 4.5 million euros.
The property has been looted and is in poor condition, but it is protected by the state.

“There have been various violations. Theft and investigations. The department took measures, the police are currently investigating the theft. The investigation is not yet complete,” said Arūnas Giraitis, the head of the Utena department of the Department of Cultural Heritage.
Seven years ago, a public institution called Siaurojo geležinkelio klubas acquired the entire narrow-gauge complex from Panevėžys to Biržai.
The institution did nothing with the property and owes the state around 80,000 euros, so the tax inspectorate initiated bankruptcy proceedings.
Journalists were unable to reach representatives of the institution.
According to experts, it would be best to sell such property in parts – faster and more reliably.
However, representatives of the existing Aukštaitija Narrow Gauge Railway fear that the property of the Panevėžys company will be divided into parts and scrapped.

“If there was a decision that people would restore it as heritage, that would be fine, but if it turns out that it will be sold for land and scrap, that’s not good,” said VItautas Žekonis, a representative of the Aukštaitija Narrow Gauge Railway.
The narrow-gauge railway in Lithuania is 124 years old. The line needs rails, axles, and other authentic parts that are no longer manufactured, so workers keep an eye on the rails being sold.
“It’s nice to see dates from the last century on the rails. It’s nice that they preserved it,” emphasized VItautas Žekonis.
