China has launched the production of hydrogen-powered trams for Malaysia: New technologies for urban transport
11.09.2024
Mass production of “smart” hydrogen-powered trams intended for delivery to Malaysia has begun in China, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The project is being implemented by CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co., Ltd. in the city of Yibin.
Siemens to Invest $60 Million in the First High-Speed Train Manufacturing Plant in the U.S.
These innovative trams are equipped with a hydrogen energy system that significantly increases their range and reduces refueling time.
The first model of such a tram was released back in 2023 and sent for testing in Malaysia.
The new series has received a number of improvements. Among them are autonomous operation, enhanced energy-saving systems, and specially equipped zones for people with disabilities.
These innovations make the tram not only more efficient but also more convenient for various categories of passengers.
Malaysia has ordered 38 units of “smart” hydrogen trams.
By the end of 2025, 17 trams will be put into operation, marking an important step in the development of the country’s transport infrastructure.
Hydrogen trams are becoming an increasingly popular mode of transportation, with their development being supported not only in China but also in other countries.
For example, South Korea is also actively working in this direction: Hyundai Rotem has signed a contract to supply 34 H2 model hydrogen trams to the city of Daejeon, with delivery scheduled for 2026-2028.
It is worth noting that in China, the first hydrogen tram line was temporarily suspended.
The reason was a lack of passengers, raising questions about the demand for this type of transport in the domestic market.
Hydrogen fuel technologies are developing rapidly, and the experiences of Malaysia and South Korea may become indicators of success for this type of transport in the future.
