Italy Expands ETCS Deployment Across 1,400 Kilometers of Track
05.08.2025
ETCS is actively being deployed on Italy’s railways, with the system extended by another 1,400 kilometers as part of a nationwide infrastructure digitalization effort. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

ETCS Accelerates Railway Digital Transformation
RFI (part of FS Group) has completed another major phase of the national ETCS deployment program, covering 21 sections of track totaling 1,400 kilometers.
The project is financed by the European Union under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with total investments reaching €2.5 billion.

By June 2026, Italy aims to upgrade approximately 2,800 kilometers of railway infrastructure. This will boost operational safety, reduce train intervals, and align the network with European interoperability standards.
Key contractors involved in the rollout include Hitachi, Alstom, Mermec, and Progress Rail. Around 2,000 specialists are currently working on implementation sites across the country.
ETCS Moves Beyond High-Speed Rail in Italy
Previously focused on high-speed lines, ETCS is now being installed on conventional railway routes and critical transport hubs.
This shift enables the creation of a unified digital control environment across the national rail network.
The initiative aims to cut operational costs, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce the environmental impact of railway operations.
The Italian government views ETCS deployment as a cornerstone of its sustainable transport strategy. Long term, this program supports integration with broader European railway systems.
