Inland Rail has completed the redevelopment of Wangaratta Station, transforming it into a modern, accessible hub that supports future freight expansion through Victoria’s North East corridor. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The $B2A project officially launched in May 2025 after construction began in 2023 under McConnell Dowell’s supervision. It focused on enabling safe passage for double-stacked freight trains by increasing rail clearance.

Inland Rail Modernizes Wangaratta Infrastructure

Two aging pedestrian footbridges were removed and replaced with a new underpass, allowing for safer and easier access across the station. Engineers also constructed a new westbound rail track parallel to the existing one.

Inland Rail also added a new station platform and a car park on the western side. These changes improved commuter flow and added vital infrastructure to meet growing demand.

Accessibility was significantly enhanced with new stairs, lifts, and ramps, helping the station better serve passengers with limited mobility. The Green Street bridge was replaced, and the tracks were lowered to support the freight network.

Inland Rail Project Supports Regional Growth

This redevelopment aligns with Inland Rail’s commitment to improving logistics while enhancing safety and urban integration for the local community.

Residents and businesses now benefit from safer pedestrian routes, better train access, and a more efficient freight corridor through Wangaratta and beyond.

By investing in key infrastructure, Inland Rail strengthens freight capacity while also stimulating economic growth across Victoria’s transport network.

This project serves as a model for balancing freight priorities with regional development goals, making future rail movement faster, safer, and more sustainable.
