Inland Rail Reaches Key Milestone with New Bridge Beams
23.07.2025
Inland Rail has achieved a significant milestone in Victoria as the first of seven massive beams for the new Hamilton Street bridge arrived in Broadford, marking crucial progress in this transformative rail project. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Each beam stretches 35.5 meters and weighs 35 tonnes, forming the primary structural support for the upgraded bridge. The replacement of the Hamilton Street bridge with a higher structure is essential because it ensures clearance for double-stacked freight trains, enhancing capacity across the network.

The beams were produced at Haywards Fabrication in Launceston before being moved by road to the port, where they were loaded onto a vessel for transport across the Bass Strait to Port Melbourne. After docking, trucks delivered them via the Hume Freeway to Broadford in mid-July.

Inland Rail Ensures Infrastructure Advancement
Installation begins on Monday, July 28, as crews position the first beam with precision. Additional beams will follow in the coming weeks, signaling steady progress toward completing the project on schedule. And as work advances, the new bridge will significantly improve freight efficiency and rail reliability.
Inland Rail Boosts Freight Connectivity
This milestone demonstrates Inland Rail’s commitment to modernizing Australia’s freight network. By enabling double-stacked trains, the project will reduce transport costs and strengthen supply chain resilience. So, businesses and communities alike will benefit from faster, more reliable freight movement between key economic hubs.
With strategic planning and timely execution, Inland Rail continues to position Victoria at the center of a national logistics transformation, driving long-term economic growth and creating lasting value for the entire rail sector.
