Indian Railways recently introduced an electronic interlocking system at Shakurbasti in New Delhi. This modern system, featuring a Visual Display Unit (VDU)-based interface, now manages 493 routes seamlessly, replacing India’s oldest mechanical yard.

Indian Railways Focuses on Reducing Accidents

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed a notable drop in train accidents from 135 in 2014-15 to 40 in 2023-24. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of comprehensive safety measures implemented nationwide.

The Accidents per Million Train Kilometers (APMTKM) index also saw a substantial reduction, from 0.11 in 2014-15 to 0.03 in 2023-24. This 73% improvement reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to safety.

Upgrades at Stations and Level Crossings

By October 2024, 6,608 stations adopted advanced electrical or electronic interlocking systems, replacing outdated technology. Additionally, 11,053 level crossing gates were interlocked, ensuring enhanced safety at critical points in the railway network.
