In Austria, for the decarbonization of the Zillertal railway, they opted for batteries instead of hydrogen
05.04.2024
The government of Tyrol decided to conduct “island” electrification and purchase trains with battery traction capability, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This decision was in response to research findings from the Vienna University of Technology, which identified the most effective decarbonization methods.
The Zillertal railway had been searching for alternatives to diesel trains for several years, and hydrogen trains were also considered.
However, due to high project costs and political disagreements, funding was denied.
Turning to the university, Tyrolean authorities explored alternative options and preferred island electrification with battery-powered trains due to reluctance to install high-voltage lines along the entire route.
Now the Tyrolean government is planning the construction of charging infrastructure for the electrification of the Zillertal railway, aiming to complete decarbonization by 2030.
