Modernization Projects on the Hudson Line
Proposed investments in the Hudson Line prioritize reliability, faster service, and regional economic growth. Plans include evaluating a third track on the Harlem Line and improving connections to Penn Station.
The MTA will partner with neighboring states to streamline ticketing, schedules, and cross-state travel. A regional working group will enhance coordination for events like the 2026 World Cup at MetLife Stadium.
Metro-North currently operates express services along the Hudson Line, reaching Grand Central Terminal from Poughkeepsie in about 95 minutes during peak periods. Proposed upgrades will further reduce travel times.
Amtrak’s Empire Service already completes routes between New York and Poughkeepsie in as little as 83 minutes. Trips to Albany typically take 2 hours and 25 minutes under current schedules.
Future funding through the MTA’s 2025–2029 capital plan will support additional projects such as new tracks and expanded services. Governor Hochul emphasized improving infrastructure to support economic growth and transit reliability.
MTA CEO Janno Lieber highlighted Metro-North’s 98% on-time performance and stressed the importance of maintaining climate-resilient systems. He praised Hochul’s leadership and commitment to modernizing the Hudson Line network.
State Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez added that these investments will strengthen Amtrak and Metro-North services while prioritizing sustainability. She underscored the importance of partnerships to deliver long-term benefits.
Governor Hochul emphasized that the Hudson Line proposal reflects New York’s commitment to building efficient, sustainable, and future-ready transportation networks. Commuters can expect faster, more reliable services after these enhancements.
