Hitachi Rail Leads Thailand’s Digital Railway Transformation
20.11.2024
Hitachi Rail is revolutionizing Thailand’s rail infrastructure by implementing state-of-the-art digital signalling. These upgrades promise safer, faster, and more reliable railway services for intercity connections. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Hitachi Rail Enhances Speed and Safety
Hitachi Rail is deploying its European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1 across two key rail lines in Thailand. The upgrades span 780.7 kilometers, including the Northeast Line from Nong Waeng Rai to Nong Phok and the North Line from Den Chai to Ngao. Three vehicles will also be equipped with onboard ETCS systems, enhancing operational efficiency.

This advanced signalling system enables seamless communication between trains and trackside signals. The technology optimizes train movement, ensures adherence to speed limits, and increases capacity, improving both reliability and safety for passengers and freight operators.
Thailand’s Double-Track Development and Hitachi Rail’s Role
The upgrades are part of Thailand’s ambitious double-track development program, aimed at improving intercity rail connections. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is modernizing its network by adding tracks, refurbishing stations, and installing cutting-edge ETCS signalling systems. These efforts align with the national goal of creating a uniform and secure train control system.
Hitachi Rail has been selected as the primary supplier for the first phase, covering seven key routes. This project underscores the company’s expertise in delivering innovative railway solutions worldwide, with ETCS already operational on 26,000 kilometers of rail globally.
Hannes Boyer, Vice President of Mainline Signalling at Hitachi Rail, praised the project’s potential to enhance safety and efficiency. He emphasized their comprehensive approach, from design and equipment supply to installation, testing, and commissioning.
Hitachi Rail’s involvement in Thailand’s rail modernization reflects its commitment to advancing global railway infrastructure. By integrating proven technology and innovative solutions, the company is driving safer and faster travel while supporting Thailand’s long-term economic growth.
