Metrolinx Receives Guelph’s Official Endorsement
City councillors unanimously supported the plan, even though it depends on provincial funding. Officials stressed the need for interim GO bus services until rail infrastructure upgrades are complete.
Project Manager Oriana Aguas highlighted the expected 500,000 annual trips by 2041 on the new route. Public engagement included over 600 interactions, with 400 respondents participating in an online survey.
Residents strongly favored the project, urging officials to accelerate its implementation. Aguas emphasized Cambridge’s transit challenges and proposed service intervals between 30 to 60 minutes.
Metrolinx Expected to Cover Project Costs
Since August, regional staff have sought endorsements from city councils to advance the plan. Councillor Caton praised the initiative, noting frequent complaints about limited travel options between the cities.
Caton inquired about its impact on healthcare access and requested relevant studies. Regional staff acknowledged economic benefits but emphasized that further research is necessary before implementation.
Officials anticipate that Metrolinx will assume full financial responsibility, allowing Guelph to avoid additional expenses. Transportation Engineering Manager Steve Anderson confirmed that provincial funding would cover all project costs.
Councillor O’Rourke expressed enthusiasm, supporting the proposal and highlighting the advantage of utilizing existing rail infrastructure. Environmental assessments remain uncertain until Metrolinx provides further guidance.
Mayor Guthrie called the project a valuable collaboration, stressing the importance of ongoing communication. He expressed optimism about the initiative, believing it will benefit multiple communities in the region.
