First CITYLINK Train Arrives in Saarbrücken for Saarbahn
16.06.2025
The first CITYLINK train has arrived in Saarbrücken to provide seamless service between Germany and France using tram tracks and railway lines. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Operator Saarbahn Netz introduced the modern CITYLINK train, which will launch direct service between Saarbrücken, Sarreguemines, and nearby regions. It combines tram and mainline rail operations.

The supply contract was signed in January 2022. Stadler will produce 504 trains for six transport operators in Germany and Austria. Saarbahn ordered 28 units and may acquire 21 more through an option agreement.
CITYLINK Undergoes Testing and Certification
CITYLINK trains are being assembled at Stadler’s plant in Valencia. The manufacturer will also handle maintenance throughout each train’s service life.
In September 2024, CITYLINK was showcased at the InnoTrans exhibition. Several units are undergoing certification testing: dynamic tests in the Czech Republic, electromagnetic compatibility in Munich, and climate testing in Vienna.
CITYLINK Meets German and French Regulatory Standards
In Saarbrücken, trains are being tested for compliance with Germany’s EBO and BoStrab safety standards, which govern railway and urban rail operations.
Since the route crosses the German-French border, CITYLINK must also be approved for service in France. Certification results will apply to vehicles for other project participants, helping reduce costs and speed up deployment.
