Transform Central Valley Railways with Expanded Funding
The San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission recently announced a $122 million grant to transform Central Valley railways and modernize transportation systems. Combined with previous investments, total funding now approaches $2 billion.

This financial boost will accelerate construction, allowing new passenger trains to operate by late 2026. The initiative focuses on reducing traffic congestion, improving regional connectivity, and providing sustainable travel alternatives.
How Grant Funds Help Transform Central Valley Railways
Funding includes $120 million for double-tracking and sidings to reduce freight conflicts. These improvements will ensure smoother operations, better schedules, and fewer delays for travelers across the Central Valley.
Another $2 million supports workforce training programs at Stockton’s ACE Rail Maintenance Facility. This initiative prepares young workers for careers in rail transportation, promoting economic growth and job creation.
Authorities plan to increase Amtrak trains serving Sacramento to six daily by 2030, improving schedules. Enhanced connectivity to the Bay Area will further ease commutes and support regional economic expansion.
ACE focuses on weekday commuters, currently operating four round trips between Stockton and San Jose. Planned extensions will add stops in Manteca, Ripon, Modesto, Ceres, Turlock, Livingston, and Merced.
The northern ACE branch expands services to Lodi, Elk Grove, Sacramento City College, and Natomas. Future plans include connecting Ceres to San Jose, offering five trips within the next few years.
A new station in north Lathrop will allow passengers to transfer between routes, increasing flexibility. Both Amtrak and ACE will share tracks along the Stockton-Sacramento corridor, reducing costs and enhancing efficiency.
The grant, part of the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill signed by President Biden, supports broader improvements. These include integrating Amtrak and ACE services with California’s high-speed rail project in Merced.
High-speed connections between Bakersfield and Merced need further funding to complete initial construction. Experts estimate an additional $100 billion may be required to expand services statewide.
Despite funding challenges, supporters believe these upgrades will modernize transportation and reduce environmental impacts. Critics, however, cite delays and cost overruns as potential risks to completion.
With federal support and local backing, the transformation of Central Valley railways promises better travel options, job creation, and sustainable transportation solutions. Residents and businesses stand to benefit significantly from these improvements.
