Eglinton East LRT Project to Transform Scarborough Transit
18.05.2025
The Eglinton East LRT project is gaining momentum as city officials advance plans to restore rapid transit access to underserved areas in eastern Scarborough following the closure of Line 3. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Originally part of the Transit City vision, the project was delayed for years as other priorities emerged. But now, the Eglinton East LRT is positioned to address long-standing transit inequities and improve mobility for thousands.

The proposed 15-kilometer line will begin at Kennedy Station, then follow Eglinton Avenue East, Kingston Road, and Morningside Avenue, ending at Malvern Town Centre. Planned stops include UTSC, Markham Road, and Sheppard Avenue.
This route is expected to improve access for students, workers, and families in areas previously left out of Toronto’s rapid transit grid. It also supports sustainable alternatives to car travel in one of the city’s most congested corridors.
Expanding Eglinton East LRT Toward the Toronto Zoo
Transit advocates have urged planners to extend the line past Malvern to reach the Toronto Zoo. A further extension into Pickering would serve more residents and support cross-regional travel across the GTA.
These ideas reflect the need for integrated, cross-boundary systems that reduce car use and enhance regional economic connections.
Why Eglinton East LRT Is Crucial for Equity?
More than just a transit upgrade, the project reflects Toronto’s commitment to equity. It would reconnect communities, support students at UTSC, and offer connections to GO Transit, TTC routes, and future subway lines.
Though a construction date is not set, planning and environmental reviews are underway. The City of Toronto continues developing funding strategies to move the project forward.
If completed, this will be one of Toronto’s longest LRT lines and a key step toward a more inclusive transit future.
