With Honda and Stellantis moving to rail in Italy, DHL is also joining in, signaling that the big companies are willing to give preference to rail if the right services are provided. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to RailFreight.

DHL

In fact, the German company is launching a new intermodal service that will connect the port of Genoa in the northwest of Italy with the international port of Padua in the northeast. The train will carry 28 40-foot containers and two weekly round trips are scheduled at the moment.

The service is provided in cooperation with two intermodal companies. GTS Rail, headquartered in Bari, southern Italy, and Hannibal, a subsidiary of Contship, from Genoa. The first will take care of traction services, while the second will act as a multimodal transport operator.

Sky Train, a train that flies in the air and requires almost no energy

This transition from road to rail will mainly help relieve the port of Genoa. This is due to the fact that customs operations can be carried out directly at the port of Padua. To better understand the impact this service will have, each train will take 28 trucks off the road. Given that there will be two rotations each week, this means that 112 trucks are taken off the road each week.

DHL is not the first major company in Italy to decide in the past couple of months to switch from road to rail. Stellantis started the exchange of goods by rail between its two operations in Poland and Italy last August in cooperation with Arcese and Sangritana. More recently, Sangritana was also responsible for a new service on behalf of Honda to transport motorcycle components by rail from Trieste to Honda’s plant in the Sangro Valley in southeastern Italy.
