Denmark has launched its first battery-electric train from Siemens Mobility, marking a major step toward greener transportation in regional rail services across the country. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The two-car Mireo Plus B began passenger operations on the lightly used line between Lemvig and Thyborøn. Six more trains ordered by Midtjyske Jernbaner in 2022 will join the fleet this autumn.

Siemens designed Mireo Plus B to carry 282 passengers, including 127 seated, while reaching a top speed of 140 km/h. Its battery range of 120 km makes it ideal for non-electrified routes.

New Infrastructure for Denmark’s Green Rail

To support operations, five rapid charging stations were installed at depots and terminal stops. They can recharge batteries from 20% to 100% in just 15 minutes, reducing turnaround times significantly.

Infrastructure upgrades also strengthened tracks, raising axle load capacity from 17.4 to 22.5 tons. These changes ensure the fleet meets modern safety and performance standards effectively.

Denmark Modernizes Regional Rail Fleet

The new trains will replace Lynette diesel units built in the 1980s by Duewag and Scandia. This shift reflects Denmark’s goal to cut emissions and improve efficiency in regional rail services.

This project represents Siemens Mobility’s first export order for battery-powered Mireo trains. As demand for sustainable rail grows, similar solutions are expected to appear in other European markets.

Denmark’s adoption of battery technology shows how rail operators can balance modernization, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness without full electrification.
