Leasing company Nexrail has introduced the new generation of hybrid locomotives, DE18 Stage V, from Vossloh Rolling Stock, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

New Hybrid Locomotives for Europe

These innovative machines combine a powerful Stage V diesel engine with a traction battery capacity of 74 kWh, providing a maximum output of 560 kW.

Shunting Operations with Battery-Powered Locomotives

They not only significantly save fuel, reducing CO2 emissions by 20-30%, but also operate quietly and emission-free for extended periods.

Equipped with ETCS system upgradeable to Level 2, these locomotives become a versatile solution for shunting operations across Europe.

Special attention is given to environmental aspects: the locomotives can use (bio)diesel fuel HVO, reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions by 98%.

A framework agreement with Vossloh Rolling Stock for the supply of 50 hybrid DE18 Stage V locomotives underscores Nexrail’s ambitious plans to modernize rail transport in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and France.

It is expected that by November 2024, the new locomotives will receive all necessary approvals, with deliveries continuing through the end of the year.

To finance this ambitious project, Nexrail successfully secured a €322 million credit from a consortium of European banks in 2023.
