06.07.2025
A CN freight train derailed near Glendora, Mississippi, on July 5, 2025, releasing toxic chemicals and forcing the evacuation of around 200 residents, according to
Railway Supply.

What Happened During the CN Train Derailment?
The accident occurred at 2:47 p.m. on CN’s Yazoo Subdivision, about 100 miles south of Memphis. Thirteen railcars derailed, including a tank containing benzene, a toxic and flammable chemical classified as a carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The tank ignited, prompting an emergency response and hazardous smoke. Fire crews from Tallahatchie County battled the blaze through the evening. As of 9 p.m. ET, the evacuation order remained in effect.
According to the CDC, benzene exposure can cause confusion, tremors, and long-term cancer risks.
Residents were advised to decontaminate and seek medical care immediately.

CN Train Derails and Affects Amtrak Operations
The derailment forced Amtrak to suspend operations of its City of New Orleans route. Northbound trains were stopped in Jackson, Mississippi,
while southbound trains between Carbondale and New Orleans were canceled. Route details are available on Amtrak’s official site.
Attempts to arrange bus transportation failed, and passengers returned to their departure points. CN’s shared infrastructure, visible on the CN Network Map, highlights the dependency between freight and passenger rail.
Investigation Underway, Environmental Risks Remain
Hazmat teams are monitoring air and soil contamination. CN has not yet released a full cargo manifest. Investigations are being conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Railroad Administration.
The response is guided by U.S. hazardous materials regulations published by the Department of Transportation. Cleanup operations may take several days, and residents are urged to follow local guidance. This incident adds to a string of derailments involving hazardous materials and highlights safety concerns in the rail sector.
