China to Invest Billions in Africa’s Railway Development

China Railway Engineering Group and China Railway Engineering Design and Consulting will implement the construction of a 282-kilometer railway line. This route will connect the city of Uvinza in Tanzania with Musongati in Burundi, a region rich in nickel, gold, copper, iron, platinum, and palladium deposits.

The project is part of a larger 651-kilometer railway corridor development. The African Development Bank is financing this initiative, aiming to transport up to 3 million tons of minerals annually.

In addition to new railway construction, Tanzania is actively upgrading its rolling stock. In 2020, TRC signed a contract with South Korean company SSRST for the supply of 59 passenger coaches.

A year later, Hyundai Rotem agreed to manufacture and deliver 17 electric locomotives and 10 electric trains for $295.74 million. Last December, CRRC International supplied 264 freight wagons as part of a $127 millioncontract for 1,430 wagons.
