China Increased Railway Transport Volume in January 2025

China demonstrated railway transport growth in January 2025 by increasing both passenger and cargo traffic. The number of transported passengers and cargo significantly rose compared to the previous year. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Growth of Passenger Transport in China
In the first month of 2025, Chinese railways transported 369 million passengers, which is 12.1% more than in the same period of 2024.

High-speed trains served 275 million passengers in January, marking a 10.6% increase compared to the previous year. This accounts for 74.6% of the total passenger transportation volume for the month.
For comparison, in January 2022, the number of passengers was 179 million, almost half of the current figures. The total passenger turnover for January reached 144.6 billion passenger-kilometers, increasing by 17.6%.
Cargo Transport and Infrastructure Investments
Chinese railways transported 423 million tons of cargo in January 2025, confirming the steady growth of the transportation sector. Cargo turnover reached 288.47 billion ton-kilometers.
The volume of container transportation amounted to 77 million tons, an increase of 10.9% compared to 2024. The transport of metallic ores grew by 17.5%, reaching 48 million tons.
According to the National Railway Administration, CR’s investments in fixed assets for January reached ¥43.9 billion ($6.12 billion). This is 3.7% more than in January 2024.
Economic growth and infrastructure modernization contribute to increasing transport volumes. The development of the railway network improves transport accessibility for passengers and businesses.
