Berlin Launches Stadler U-Bahn Train Tests Ahead of 2026 Rollout
23.06.2025
Berlin is actively testing its new Stadler-built U-Bahn trains as part of the city’s metro modernization, with ten units undergoing trials before they begin passenger service in 2026 on lines U5 through U9. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The six-car prototype stationed at Friedrichsfelde depot is fully assembled and stripped of seating, allowing engineers to inspect braking systems and the interaction of modular components across its 100-meter length.

Engineers are running tests throughout the Berlin network, analyzing safety functions, system integration, and noise emissions. These trials help ensure compliance with regulations and long-term performance standards.
BVG CEO Henrik Falk noted the tests show strong results and confirmed the goal of greater system stability and enhanced passenger experience through better design, comfort, and space.
The trains feature brighter interiors, modern information displays, wider doors, and improved accessibility for those with wheelchairs, luggage, or prams. Operators benefit from a newly designed ergonomic driver’s cabin.
Berlin U-Bahn Prepares for Type J and JK Fleet Integration
Berlin will begin driver and maintenance crew training in early 2026. Passenger operations for the Type J series are set to launch by summer.
Meanwhile, progress on the narrower JK trains, built for small-profile lines like U1 to U4, is further along. BVG has begun staff training, with passenger service scheduled after the summer holidays.
Up to 140 JK vehicles will enter service by the end of the year. Technical challenges in compact car systems delayed the J rollout, but lessons from the JK series improved the final J design.
Stadler Germany CEO Jure Mikolčić emphasized the innovation behind both fleets, highlighting their fully integrated design, digital systems, and focus on safety, comfort, and accessibility for Berlin’s future passengers.
Berlin Metro Upgrade Marks BVG’s Largest Rail Investment
The procurement contract, valued at up to €3 billion ($3.2 billion), represents BVG’s most extensive rolling stock deal. It includes up to 1,500 cars to be delivered by 2035.
Currently, 484 cars are confirmed for delivery by 2027. The deal also includes a 32-year supply agreement for maintenance parts, ensuring long-term support for Berlin’s U-Bahn transformation.
