18.11.2023
Belarusian potassium fertilizer producer ‘Belaruskali’ has filed a lawsuit against Lithuania, seeking damages estimated at 1 billion euros, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The manufacturer submitted arbitration documents to Lithuania based on a 1999 agreement between Lithuania and Belarus on the encouragement and protection of investments.

The content of the arbitration submission is under analysis, and an appropriate response will be provided in due course, according to the Lithuanian Ministry of Communications and Transport.
Due to the confidentiality of the arbitration process and to avoid compromising Lithuania’s interests in the case, no further comments can be made at this time.
Earlier this week, news broke about ‘Belaruskali’ initiating an investment arbitration process, demanding Lithuania to compensate damages amounting to 1 billion euros.
It’s worth noting that the contract between Lietuvos geležinkėliai (Lithuanian Railways) and the Belarusian state-owned company ‘Belaruskali’ for the transit of fertilizers through Lithuania was terminated in February 2022.
This led to the cessation of transporting Belarusian products through Lithuania.
Additionally, last year, the Lithuanian Supreme Administrative Court dismissed ‘Belaruskali’s’ lawsuit against Lithuanian Railways regarding the termination of the fertilizer transportation agreement.
