The introduction of three two-car battery-electric units will deliver cleaner mobility for commuters between Remscheid-Lennep and Düsseldorf Central Station. These modern trains offer a 120-kilometer range and a maximum speed of 140 km/h.

They operate flexibly under overhead wires or battery mode, ensuring efficiency without major infrastructure changes. Smart Train Lease enabled fast procurement, while Siemens designed the units for energy savings and passenger comfort.

Battery trains enhance comfort and reliability

Each train provides 122 seats, including eight in first class, plus multi-purpose areas for bicycles. Passengers will benefit from WiFi, USB ports, and barrier-free access, creating a seamless and inclusive travel experience.

Siemens’ advanced window technology improves mobile reception, while wide gangways and quiet interiors boost comfort. After years of disruptions and bus replacements, Regiobahn aims to restore dependable service for commuters.

Charging occurs during motion and at stops, eliminating costly upgrades. Advanced silicon carbide technology reduces energy use and operating costs, making the trains both eco-friendly and economical.

Maintenance will be handled by Siemens under a full-service agreement in Dortmund, supported by predictive monitoring via the Railigent X platform to ensure near-total availability.

Regional support remains strong, with VRR’s majority stake in Regiobahn reinforcing local investment. Officials say the project strengthens direct connections from Bergisches Land to Düsseldorf without transfers, boosting convenience for passengers.

With this initiative, NRW positions itself as a leader in sustainable mobility and sets a clear benchmark for modern regional rail systems across Germany.
