Battery-electric trains for Denmark: Stadler to deliver 24 units

Denmark has ordered 24 battery-electric trains from Stadler. These trains will replace the outdated diesel fleet, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The contract between Stadler and the Danish operator Lokaltog was signed in 2024. The first of 14 trains included in the firm order is scheduled for delivery in 2028. The new train fleet will improve the sustainability and convenience of regional transportation.

Benefits of battery-electric trains for Denmark
The Flirt Akku that Denmark will receive are designed to operate both on electrical grids and using battery power. They can run up to 100 kilometers without recharging, making them particularly effective on routes without electrification. Stadler will ensure full accessibility for passengers with disabilities, with designated spaces for wheelchairs inside the trains.
Replacing outdated train fleet in Denmark
Currently, Denmark operates diesel-powered IC2 trains, which have been in service since 1997. The new battery-electric trains supplied by Stadler will replace them, enhancing environmental safety. The trains will run on railway lines across Zealand, Lollandh, and Falster islands, reducing emissions and improving travel comfort.
In the tender initiated in 2023, CAF and Siemens Mobility also submitted bids. However, after a thorough review, Lokaltog selected Stadler’s proposal. Lokaltog’s fleet currently consists of 58 electric trains, including 13 IC2 trains, 41 Lint trains, and four RegioSprinters. Stadler plans to complete the delivery of all battery-electric trains by 2028.
