Auckland train services are now back on track after extensive winter upgrades were completed to modernize infrastructure ahead of the City Rail Link opening in 2026. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
More than 400 workers operated day and night during the school holidays, focusing on high-priority areas. Key work included foundation rebuilding and new drainage installation at Homai, Te Mahia, and Takanini stations.

These upgrades targeted sections of the Southern Line south of Puhinui, where service was temporarily suspended. The improvements will support higher train frequencies once CRL operations begin.

KiwiRail partnered with Auckland Transport to complete the project under its Rail Network Rebuild (RNR) program. This initiative is now nearing its final phase across the Auckland rail network.
Dave Gordon, Chief Metro and Capital Programme Officer at KiwiRail, thanked the public for their patience and flexibility. He highlighted that uninterrupted closures allowed faster and deeper foundation work.
Ongoing Upgrades in Auckland Suburbs This Month
Further upgrades are planned during the September/October school holidays. In addition, weekend work will begin this month in suburbs such as Newmarket and Parnell.
In west Auckland, work continues near Henderson Station to improve drainage systems. New tracks will be installed, and the platform will be extended to meet future capacity needs.
Auckland Transport has also completed accessibility enhancements at the station, including new lifts and escalators, supporting smoother commuter experiences.
Together, these efforts will prepare Auckland’s rail system for increased demand. The enhancements form a key part of the city’s long-term transport transformation strategy.
