ARTC flood recovery efforts progress after NSW disruptions
28.05.2025
ARTC flood recovery continues across New South Wales following extensive rail damage, with freight and XPT services gradually resuming while public transport remains partially suspended. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is actively restoring rail services in flood-impacted regions of New South Wales. Damage from storms affected the North Coast and Hunter Valley rail networks, halting both freight and passenger trains.

On the North Coast corridor, crews resolved several signaling issues that delayed track recertification. Freight trains resumed operations on May 26, and XPT passenger services are scheduled to restart on May 27. ARTC has implemented reduced speed limits to ensure track safety.
Hunter Valley network advances ARTC flood recovery
In the Hunter Valley, all four lines at Sandgate and Kooragang North Fork have been recertified. Operational delays caused by the storm have subsided, allowing full functionality in this critical freight corridor.
ARTC continues to monitor track conditions between trains and conducts inspections to stabilize track health. These measures will remain until the infrastructure shows consistent reliability.
Public transport impact amid ARTC flood recovery
Despite progress, public transportation remains disrupted in several areas. Buses are currently replacing trains between Maitland, Telarah, and Dungog on the Hunter Line. On the North Coast, coaches substitute XPT trains, although no service is available to Gloucester, Kempsey, Wingham, or Dungog.
A new weather system is approaching with strong winds but lower rainfall expectations. ARTC remains on alert and adjusts response efforts as conditions evolve.
An ARTC spokesperson confirmed the corporation’s focus on rapid and safe recovery. “We are committed to restoring all operations efficiently while keeping safety at the forefront,” the spokesperson stated.
The ARTC flood recovery plan includes coordination with authorities and real-time weather updates to ensure timely decisions. With trackwork progressing steadily, the corporation aims to minimize service disruption and restore confidence in the network.
