The Federal Railroad Administration’s report highlights progress toward bringing Amtrak service back to Eastern Oregon.
The Pioneer line route through northeastern Oregon, discontinued in 1997, is one of the routes identified by the Federal Railroad Administration’s report “Amtrak Daily Long-Distance Service Study,” delivered to Congress in January 2025.

Passenger rail service ended in Eastern Oregon in 1997 when Amtrak’s Pioneer line was discontinued. For 20 years, this route connected Seattle to Denver, including cities like Boise, Pendleton, and Baker City.

The FRA’s report coincides with Greyhound’s recent decision to cancel long-distance bus service in the area. Greyhound’s January 15 suspension of the Boise-to-Pasco corridor left the region without public transportation options.

Why Amtrak Service Back to Eastern Oregon Matters?

The proposed Denver-to-Portland route was named one of 15 priority projects by the FRA. Officials call this a “crucial early step” toward securing federal funding. However, the FRA noted this report is just one factor influencing decisions.

Advocates, such as Matt Krabacher from the Association of Oregon Rail and Transit Advocates, see this as a rare opportunity. “Without this report, the Pioneer line wouldn’t have this chance for restoration right now,” Krabacher said.

The Oregon Department of Transportation expressed interest in working with neighboring states to seek federal funding. Their collaboration could push plans forward as public and private sectors rally support.

Challenges to Restoring Amtrak Service Back to Eastern Oregon

The process to restore rail service could take over 15 years, the FRA cautioned. Steps include securing funding, conducting environmental reviews, and developing infrastructure. Advocates continue lobbying to keep momentum strong.

Public interest in sustainable transportation has grown, making passenger rail an appealing alternative. Stakeholders argue it can reduce vehicle reliance, connect rural communities, and boost economic activity.

The FRA’s report is a beacon of hope for Eastern Oregon’s residents. While challenges remain, regional collaboration and advocacy could make rail restoration a reality.
