Amtrak Raleigh-Greensboro service disrupted by Chantal flooding, impacting both passenger and freight rail traffic across central North Carolina. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Torrential rainfall from Tropical Storm Chantal severely damaged the main east-west rail corridor between Durham and Burlington on Sunday, cutting off service through the region.

Amtrak will launch a 12th daily Pacific Surfliner roundtrip between San Diego and Los Angeles on June 16, 2025, increasing flexibility and travel options for Southern California riders.

Norfolk Southern, which owns and maintains the line, reported multiple washouts and has launched urgent track repairs. Officials expect restoration of full service by midday Wednesday, depending on weather and track stability.

Flooding Halts Amtrak Raleigh-Greensboro Service

Because of the damage, Amtrak has temporarily suspended all trains running between Raleigh and Greensboro. The route normally supports ten daily round trips between Raleigh and Charlotte, serving North Carolina’s largest cities. Now, all eight Piedmont trains operate only between Greensboro and Charlotte.

To maintain mobility across the state, Amtrak has arranged buses for passengers traveling between Raleigh and Greensboro, including intermediate stops like Durham and Burlington. This ensures partial continuity of service while track repairs are underway.

Repairs Ongoing, Temporary Bus Routes in Place

Meanwhile, the Carolinian, which usually travels once daily between Charlotte and New York City, will begin and end its route in Raleigh until at least Wednesday morning. Passengers arriving in Raleigh from the Northeast will transfer to buses for final connections further south.

On Wednesday morning, both southbound Piedmont departures from Raleigh have been canceled. However, Amtrak and the NCDOT plan to resume full rail operations by late Wednesday if repairs proceed on schedule. The evening Carolinian is expected to continue its full route to Charlotte.

To ease disruptions, Amtrak is waiving change and cancellation fees for affected passengers. Riders are advised to check train status regularly using the Amtrak app or website for the latest updates.
