Amtrak and its partners are making historic investments to modernize America’s rail infrastructure, creating jobs, boosting the economy, and improving travel efficiency through nationwide construction projects.

Amtrak’s Infrastructure Boom: Transforming U.S. Rail Travel

Amtrak and industry leaders are revolutionizing America’s rail system with the largest investment in its history. These transformative projects, backed by strong private-sector support, enhance mobility, drive economic growth, and create thousands of skilled jobs.

During a high-level industry roundtable, Amtrak executives and private-sector leaders discussed the future of passenger rail and the hundreds of infrastructure projects reshaping the nation’s transportation network. Representing more than 100,000 workers nationwide, these partners are delivering Amtrak’s most ambitious modernization plan ever.

Amtrak’s Expanding Rail Network: Economic Growth and Innovation

Amtrak is undergoing a historic transformation fueled by unprecedented investments in critical infrastructure projects. In 2024 alone, the company allocated $4.5 billion for capital improvements, planning to increase investments by 50% in 2025. These upgrades modernize rail travel while strengthening America’s workforce.

According to Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner, the company is committed to world-class infrastructure, investing in bridges, tunnels, and trainsets to meet increasing passenger demand. Spanning 500+ cities, towns, and rural areas, Amtrak’s projects improve connections while boosting economic expansion.

Private-Sector Support Powers Amtrak’s Infrastructure Growth

Industry leaders in construction, rail supply, and engineering fully support Amtrak’s modernization efforts. Greg Hill, Kiewit Corporation’s Executive Vice President, emphasized that these projects enhance transportation safety, accessibility, and workforce development. His company, alongside others, is replacing aging tunnels, bridges, and rail lines.

Marc Buncher, CEO of Siemens Mobility North America, highlighted a decade-long partnership with Amtrak in revolutionizing rail technology. Siemens is producing cutting-edge locomotives and trainsets at its U.S.-based manufacturing facilities, strengthening domestic supply chains and creating thousands of skilled jobs.

Clark Construction Group Co-President John O’Keefe underscored the long-term economic impact of Amtrak’s investments. These projects generate jobs for thousands of subcontractors, suppliers, and skilled workers nationwide. Michael Viggiano, Skanska’s Executive Vice President for the East region, praised Amtrak’s commitment to revitalizing critical corridors like the East River Tunnel and Sawtooth Bridges.

Modernizing Aging Rail Infrastructure with Advanced Solutions

Amtrak is replacing century-old bridges, tunnels, and stations originally built in the early 1900s. Many of these structures date back to the presidencies of McKinley, Roosevelt, and Taft, making modernization essential.

The company is also overhauling its aging train fleet, which serves 46 states with equipment averaging nearly 40 years old. By deploying new state-of-the-art trainsets and locomotives, Amtrak ensures a more comfortable, efficient, and sustainable travel experience for millions of passengers.

Investing in America: The Largest Rail Construction Boom in Decades

As Amtrak expands its capital program, it remains committed to domestic industries. In Fiscal Year 2024, 99% of procurements were sourced from American suppliers, reinforcing its support for U.S. manufacturing.

Key projects include producing 111 next-generation trainsets and 125 high-powered locomotives, alongside an upcoming contract to replace hundreds of long-distance railcars. Amtrak is also improving 380+ stations and restoring historic terminals to their original grandeur.

The company’s most ambitious projects include replacing the 151-year-old B&P Tunnel, a critical Northeast Corridor bottleneck. This megaproject, alongside various bridge and tunnel upgrades, enhances rail efficiency, reduces delays, and supports economic growth.

Sustaining Progress Through Annual Maintenance and System Upgrades

Beyond large-scale infrastructure projects, Amtrak prioritizes routine maintenance through its state-of-good-repair program. This initiative ensures continuous renewal of tracks, signals, and power infrastructure, improving safety and reliability.

Rising demand for intercity rail travel underscores the importance of these investments. With strong federal support, Amtrak is poised to expand services, introduce modern trainsets, and enhance accessibility for millions of passengers.

Leading America’s Rail Renaissance with Strong Industry Partnerships

Key industry players actively support Amtrak’s modernization vision. Notable partners include AECOM, Alstom, Clark Construction Group, Kiewit, Parsons Corporation, Siemens, Skanska, and WSP USA.

Scott Sherin, Alstom’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted Amtrak’s role in driving economic growth. Constructing new Acela trains alone supported 1,000+ jobs across 27 states, with 95% of components made in America. These investments are particularly impactful for small manufacturers in rural communities, boosting local economies.

Bane Gaiser, AECOM’s Regional Chief Executive, emphasized his company’s long-standing partnership with Amtrak in sustaining critical infrastructure. Projects such as the Susquehanna River Bridge and Frederick Douglass Tunnel demonstrate the power of strategic rail investments.

Shaping the Future of American Rail Travel

As Amtrak undertakes its largest infrastructure expansion in decades, these projects deliver long-term economic benefits while positioning the U.S. as a global rail leader. These efforts strengthen transportation networks and create career opportunities for thousands of Americans.

With sustained investment, strong private-sector partnerships, and a focus on innovation, Amtrak is reshaping passenger rail, ensuring millions can travel efficiently, affordably, and sustainably across the nation.
