Amtrak tackles the Amtrak Horizon shortage, sidelining 70 cars due to corrosion this week. This effort cuts cancellations across key routes, and services steadily improve.

The Pacific Northwest faces major disruptions, so six of seven Cascades trips now rely on buses. Twenty-six Horizon cars once powered this route, yet new equipment arrives soon.

Today, five Amfleet cars head west on the Empire Builder, leaving Chicago for the Northwest. Yesterday, one Amfleet car joined the Builder’s lineup, marking a small but notable shift.

Northeast Corridor services free up cars, and four Amfleets reached Chicago via Lake Shore Limited. This strategy bolsters the Northwest, where the equipment crunch strikes hardest.

Amtrak Horizon Shortage Impacts Midwest Routes

The Borealis, linking Chicago and the Twin Cities, adjusts to the equipment shortfall. Three Superliner cars now replace its usual four Horizon coaches and Amfleet cafe.

Earlier this year, a four-car Superliner set stepped in, but now it’s one fewer. Meanwhile, the Hiawatha service between Chicago and Milwaukee shows clear progress.

Initially, buses covered three of six Hiawatha round trips, yet today only one remains. Amtrak’s website highlights this recovery, reflecting ongoing efforts to stabilize operations.

Across its network, Amtrak shifts resources, and the Empire Builder hauls extra cars westward daily. These moves ensure passengers face fewer delays despite the unexpected equipment issue.

Solutions Emerge for Amtrak Horizon Shortage

The company targets key routes, so the Northwest and Midwest gain critical equipment boosts. Travelers can anticipate updates as Amtrak addresses the corrosion-related gap.

This reshuffling showcases Amtrak’s adaptability, and more cars will soon reinforce the Cascades service. For now, the focus stays on reducing delays and restoring full operations nationwide.
