Amtrak Gulf Coast Line Returns in June After Years of Delays. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Amtrak passengers can finally celebrate as the Gulf Coast Line is set to return. After years of delays and major restoration efforts, the long-awaited service is officially launching this June.
Amtrak Gulf Coast Line Set for June Relaunch
Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Gulf Coast Line has remained inactive, leaving travelers without a crucial transportation link. The restoration project required extensive funding, infrastructure upgrades, and years of persistent efforts. Despite numerous setbacks, the relaunch is now confirmed, bringing relief to regional passengers.

Railway Supply first reported that the final construction phase is nearing completion. The upgraded line will reconnect major Southern cities, restoring accessibility for countless commuters and tourists. The long-anticipated relaunch is expected to drive economic growth and improve regional mobility.
New Amtrak Route to Improve Gulf Coast Connectivity
The restored 145-mile route will link Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, offering expanded transportation options. Key stops include Gulfport and Biloxi, strengthening regional connections and enhancing convenience for travelers. The project aims to boost local economies and provide more efficient travel alternatives.
Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker issued a statement highlighting the project’s progress. He expressed enthusiasm for the Mobile station’s nearing completion and the positive impact on local transit. Wicker remains confident that service will officially begin by the summer.
Although anticipation is growing, Amtrak has yet to announce a full schedule or ticket availability. Reports suggest that the addition of a new layover track in Mobile will improve operational efficiency. The track will allow trains to stop without disrupting other railway traffic, ensuring smoother operations.
Amtrak Gulf Coast Line vs. Sunset Limited Service
Some speculated that the Gulf Coast Line might extend the Sunset Limited service. However, while both routes share some similarities, they will operate independently.
Sunset Limited Major Stops:
• New Orleans
• San Antonio
• Tucson
• Phoenix
• Los Angeles
The Sunset Limited runs three times per week and requires 48 hours for a complete journey. In contrast, the Gulf Coast Line will offer twice-daily service, providing a much more consistent travel schedule. Travelers will benefit from improved frequency and shorter travel times.
$21 Million Grant Secures Amtrak Gulf Coast Service
A major breakthrough came with a $21 million grant supporting the Gulf Coast Line’s operations. Senator Wicker announced the funding, emphasizing its role in increasing service reliability. The grant will help cover operating expenses, allowing for two round-trip services per day.
In a press release, Wicker called the investment a significant step toward reconnecting communities. He highlighted the importance of reliable rail service for Mississippi’s long-term transportation infrastructure.
Southern Rail Commission Chair Knox Ross described the funding as a historic achievement. He stated that restoring passenger rail service will provide significant benefits for travelers and local businesses.
A Historic Investment in Gulf Coast Transportation
Ross confirmed that the grant will subsidize operational costs for the first three years. With expanded travel options, communities in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama will experience greater connectivity. Economic growth and increased mobility are expected across the region.
This funding represents a crucial milestone in the decades-long effort to restore rail service. The return of the Gulf Coast Line will strengthen Amtrak’s network and enhance accessibility for passengers. Businesses, commuters, and visitors alike will benefit from this long-overdue transportation improvement.
