Amtrak Faces Severe Delays Due to Ongoing Mechanical Issues
07.02.2025
Amtrak continues to experience severe travel disruptions as mechanical failures cause long-distance delays. Ice-covered regions worsen the situation, but recent train breakdowns intensify scheduling chaos. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Amtrak’s Cardinal and Floridian Experience Severe Setbacks
The Cardinal suffered a major disruption between South Portsmouth and Maysville, Kentucky. The locomotive failed after running on time from Washington, D.C., causing over three-hour delays. Stranded passengers eventually reached Cincinnati after an eleven-hour holdup.

Officials arranged alternative transportation for passengers affected by this breakdown. Amtrak dispatched buses to shuttle passengers toward Chicago and intermediate destinations, mitigating additional inconvenience.
The Floridian encountered severe delays, arriving in Chicago nearly seven hours late today. Multiple operational setbacks in Florida and North Carolina worsened travel times significantly.
Yesterday, the Floridian arrived in Chicago more than three hours late. It had suffered unexplained delays leaving Camden, South Carolina, and later experienced setbacks on its Miami-bound journey.
Mechanical Failures Continue to Disrupt Amtrak’s Long-Distance Service
The California Zephyr also experienced difficulties shortly after departing from Chicago. Mechanical failures forced reliance on a borrowed freight locomotive in Illinois.
Delays worsened as the train encountered additional slowdowns en route. It left Winnemucca, Nevada, more than seven hours late today, frustrating travelers.
The Empire Builder faced an engine change after leaving Chicago on February 5. Mechanical problems required an emergency replacement, disrupting travel across North Dakota.
Eyewitnesses saw a freight locomotive leading two Amtrak engines today. The train reached Williston, North Dakota, nearly five hours late.
The Coast Starlight suffered extensive disruptions with southbound trains running severely behind schedule. A delayed Capitol Corridor train exacerbated the problem near Sacramento.
A Seattle departure left three hours, fifty-five minutes late today. Meanwhile, another service left Oakland over five hours late due to operational setbacks.
Persistent mechanical failures strain Amtrak’s aging long-distance fleet, intensifying travel delays. Increased standby equipment could mitigate these recurring disruptions and improve reliability.
