Amtrak is set to launch the Mardi Gras Service this August, bringing back Gulf Coast connectivity with scenic stops, affordable fares, and cultural charm for travelers who want both comfort and vibrant regional experiences on their journeys. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The highly anticipated Amtrak route begins service on August 18, 2025, restoring an essential rail link between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama. This 62-mile scenic corridor will enhance tourism, strengthen local economies, and provide new commuting options across six Gulf Coast cities.

Amtrak will launch a 12th daily Pacific Surfliner roundtrip between San Diego and Los Angeles on June 16, 2025, increasing flexibility and travel options for Southern California riders.

This expansion reflects Amtrak’s ambitious $6 billion investment plan for 2025, which aims to modernize infrastructure, upgrade stations, and introduce faster trains. The Mardi Gras Service represents more than convenience—it offers travelers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture and character of the Gulf Coast.

Amtrak President Roger Harris said the Mardi Gras name was a “natural choice,” symbolizing the vibrant energy of the region. He emphasized that travel should be as much about the experience as the destination because passengers deserve memorable journeys filled with local charm.

Amtrak Route Brings Cultural and Economic Benefits

Local communities across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama see this launch as a turning point. After two decades without service, the Mardi Gras route will reconnect cities and attract new visitors. Business owners expect a surge in tourism, while residents welcome improved mobility and affordable fares.

Tickets are already in high demand. Fares start at just $15 for the full journey, making this route one of the most budget-friendly intercity travel options in the U.S. Discounts are also available for seniors, students, military personnel, and children, ensuring accessibility for all travelers.

The Mardi Gras Service offers two daily round trips in each direction, taking approximately three hours and forty-three minutes. Westbound trains depart Mobile at 6:30 AM and 4:30 PM, arriving in New Orleans mid-morning and early evening. Eastbound departures from New Orleans are scheduled for 7:35 AM and 5:31 PM, making the service ideal for both day trips and overnight stays.

The stops along the route include New Orleans, Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, Pascagoula, and Mobile. Each destination features unique attractions: New Orleans boasts vibrant nightlife and jazz culture, Bay St. Louis is famous for its historic charm, and Gulfport offers water parks and aquariums. Biloxi combines casinos with art and history, Pascagoula provides serene beaches, and Mobile brings together Southern hospitality with cultural richness.

Amtrak Offers Comfort, Amenities, and Loyalty Rewards

Travelers can expect a comfortable and enjoyable experience onboard the Mardi Gras Service. Amtrak has equipped these trains with reclining seats, complimentary Wi-Fi, power outlets, and spacious luggage storage. For those who prefer premium options, business-class seating is available, offering extra comfort and convenience.

Food lovers will appreciate the onboard Café service, featuring locally inspired dishes that reflect the Gulf Coast’s culinary diversity. This focus on regional flavors turns an ordinary trip into a memorable dining experience while traveling.

Pet owners and golf enthusiasts will also find the service accommodating. Special reservations for pets and golf bags are available in advance, making the Mardi Gras route flexible for various travel needs.

Amtrak is further incentivizing travelers through its Guest Rewards program. Members can take advantage of the “3-3-3” promotion, which offers triple points on Mardi Gras rides through November 18, 2025. To qualify, passengers need to complete three trips within the promotional period. After that, every additional qualifying trip earns triple points, creating added value for frequent riders.

Despite the excitement, some passengers have expressed disappointment that this route does not restore the full Sunset Limited service, which once connected Orlando to Los Angeles before Hurricane Katrina disrupted operations in 2005. For now, the Mardi Gras Service stands as a partial restoration, but many rail advocates view it as the first step toward broader expansion.

Whether considered a replacement or a long-awaited revival, the Mardi Gras Service is generating enormous enthusiasm. Rail fans and travelers alike are eager to ride this new route, which combines affordability, comfort, and cultural immersion. For those seeking a unique Gulf Coast adventure, Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Service offers an unbeatable mix of scenic beauty, convenience, and value.
