This initiative marks the first intercity connection from Long Island in more than 80 years and offers a long-anticipated alternative to congested road travel.

The service will operate three round trips daily along the Northeast Corridor and the Ronkonkoma Branch. Key stops will include Jamaica and Hicksville, improving access for Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens residents.

Jamaica Station links directly to JFK Airport, while Ronkonkoma offers convenient access to Long Island MacArthur Airport, boosting travel flexibility for airline passengers.

Amtrak Service Meets Long Island’s Rising Mobility Needs

Residents have faced delays and long transfers using the LIRR to reach Amtrak at Penn Station. The new direct route removes this inefficiency and shortens travel times.

By eliminating transfers, Amtrak enhances convenience for business and leisure travelers. This solution supports the growing demand for seamless, time-saving transport options.

The region’s 5.4 million residents now gain direct access to major East Coast destinations. The expanded route may also draw new ridership from those avoiding traditional driving routes.

Amtrak and FRA Partner to Modernize Northeast Rail

The Federal Railroad Administration collaborates on this project through the Corridor Identification Program. Together with Amtrak, they are finalizing schedules and budgets.

Joint funding from both organizations highlights their shared commitment to regional mobility and climate goals. This investment aims to reduce traffic, pollution, and travel times.

Amtrak’s strategy aligns with national efforts to modernize rail, ease road congestion, and improve intercity travel sustainability.

As more cities seek lower-emission options, this rail link could reshape commuting in the Northeast, offering faster, greener, and more reliable service.
