Amtrak Downeaster Plans Major Station Upgrades in Maine
23.07.2025
Amtrak Downeaster is launching major station upgrades in Wells and Portland to enhance service, improve efficiency, and support growing commuter demand across New England. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Patricia Quinn, head of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, confirmed these plans during a recent Wells board meeting. She highlighted that 2024 became the best year for the Downeaster with record-breaking ridership and revenue.

Construction has started at Wells station, adding a second platform and a pedestrian bridge. These improvements will enable a sixth daily round trip between Wells and Brunswick, making commuting easier for York County residents.

North Berwick resident Keli Maibaum said she rides the train to Boston for work five days a week and values the convenience. Boston-based rider Phoebe Bitzer added that Amtrak offers the simplest travel option along the coast, especially during summer.

The project aims to expand connectivity and reduce congestion. With a new platform, operations will run more smoothly, ensuring York County commuters reach Portland and other destinations faster while improving regional accessibility.
Another major initiative involves relocating the Portland station from the transportation center to a site on the main line near Mercy Hospital. This change would eliminate 15-minute reverse moves at every stop, saving 150 minutes daily.

Quinn explained that the current layout causes bottlenecks and delays for both passenger and freight trains. Riders, however, are divided on the proposal. Some cite recent parking lot improvements, while others welcome faster, more efficient service.
Brunswick resident Dave Racicot called the train “a tremendous service” that connects communities effectively. As demand grows, Amtrak Downeaster upgrades promise a faster, more reliable experience for travelers from Brunswick to Boston.
