Amtrak Coordinates Tunnel Shutdown to Maintain Train Operations

Amtrak plans to shut down one tube at a time, allowing three out of four to remain in service. This approach helps minimize disruptions for Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road, and New Jersey Transit passengers.

Work on the second tunnel is scheduled to begin on June 2. In the meantime, Amtrak provides constant engineering oversight, increased safety inspections, and rescue gear positioned strategically within the system.

Amtrak Partners with Transit Agencies to Meet Travel Demand

To meet demand during the closures, Amtrak is working closely with LIRR and NJ Transit. These efforts include adjusting schedules and deploying resources to ensure travel between New York and the region continues smoothly.

The East River Tunnel, a crucial part of the Northeast Corridor, suffered significant damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. This project addresses that damage while improving long-term reliability.

By completing this phased modernization, Amtrak aims to strengthen rail infrastructure and offer safer, more dependable service for millions of passengers in the years ahead.
