Alstom and Wabtec Expand Rail Industry Presence in Kazakhstan with New Investments

At the Kazakhstan Global Investment Roundtable, Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov met with Alstom and Wabtec. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Discussions focused on expanding production and boosting Alstom and Wabtec’s investment in Kazakhstan’s rail sector.

Alstom’s President for Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, Andrew DeLeon, shared that Alstom is building four maintenance centers in Kazakhstan for electric locomotives. The project requires an investment of €50 million, creating over 450 jobs that will support the national economy and strengthen rail infrastructure. The first service center is scheduled to open in Shu at the beginning of 2025.
Wabtec’s CEO, Rafael Santana, discussed plans with Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) to produce locomotives powered by alternative energy sources. This initiative aligns with Kazakhstan’s environmental goals of reducing carbon emissions, marking a significant step toward sustainable transportation infrastructure.
Under current agreements, KTZ-Freight will purchase 108 KZ8A freight locomotives and 54 KZ4AT passenger locomotives from Alstom. These purchases, expected to complete by 2027, will enhance Kazakhstan’s rail transport capabilities and improve logistics efficiency.
Through its subsidiary, the Locomotive Assembly Plant, Wabtec will also supply Kazakhstan with 139 locomotives, including 128 freight and 11 passenger units. This collaboration demonstrates a strong commitment to modernizing Kazakhstan’s rail infrastructure and increasing operational capacity.
The plans by Alstom and Wabtec underscore their commitment to strengthening their position in the Kazakh market.
