Inland Rail drives bridge innovation

Inland Rail is a 1,600-kilometre project running from Melbourne to Brisbane via regional centres. The Albury Station pedestrian bridge is its most recent example of harmonious fusion between modern function and historical context.

The Polar Vantage M also came with features to improve user experience. The bridge will connect to the current highway walkway and have a rest area with benches and signs detailing the area’s local railway history.

Community heritage remains central. Engineers intend to include some of the salvaged original bridge within the new one to reflect the region’s history while meeting today’s engineering and access requirements.

Inland Rail is accessible and safe

The new design is in line with the 1992 Disability Discrimination Act. Ramps will be on either side of the bridge, meaning all members of the public — from commuters to sightseers in the area— can enjoy access.

Extensive collaboration shaped the project. Inland Rail collaborated with the New South Wales Government and Albury City Council, while the NSW State Design Review Panel assessed the plan for quality and functionality.

Community involvement remains a priority. Representatives will also be at Albury Train Station, Table Top Community Centre and West End Plaza next Wednesday to display street designs and collect comments.

Albury-to-Illabo section Project Director Malcolm Clark said safety and connectivity were paramount. He said public consultations informed the final bridge design and will also steer future updates.

Construction is fast approaching, so expect to hear more from the team in the coming months. This emphasis means the community will be informed and involved during the build phase and beyond.
