Elephants Saved by AI Cameras Near Railway Tracks in Odisha
AI-powered cameras successfully prevented a tragedy involving elephants near railway tracks in Odisha’s Rourkela forest division. Swift action by authorities ensured their safety and avoided a serious train accident.

The incident occurred when a calf and two adult elephants approached the tracks. The AI cameras detected their movement and immediately alerted the Forest Department’s control room. Real-time data and images were shared with railway officials, allowing them to halt a cargo train for 30 minutes.
How AI Cameras Monitor Railway Tracks?
The AI cameras, funded by Rourkela Steel Plant’s conservation plan, are part of a pilot project in Odisha. Four cameras were strategically installed along railway tracks in the Rourkela Forest Division. The initiative aims to prevent accidents and protect wildlife in high-risk zones.
Former Indian Forest Service officer Susanta Nanda praised the project’s success, calling it a win-win solution for conservation and development. Plans are underway to expand the initiative to other divisions, including Keonjhar and Bonai.
Public Support for Expanding AI Solutions Along Railway Tracks
A video of the incident, shared on December 8, gained over 290,000 views on social media. Users celebrated the technology’s potential, suggesting it could also be used to track poachers.
One user commented, “Perfect use of AI to save lives. This must be expanded to other regions.” Another wrote, “Your team’s work is inspiring. Keep doing what you’re doing for wildlife.”
In May, Tamil Nadu’s Forest Department implemented a similar system, installing 12 AI cameras along railway routes in Madukkarai. These projects highlight how AI can bridge the gap between infrastructure and wildlife conservation.
Through innovative measures like these, India is setting an example for sustainable development. By integrating technology into wildlife protection, authorities are ensuring harmony between progress and nature.
