Plasser & Theurer has delivered the first of 56 electric track maintenance machines to the customer ÖBB-Infrastruktur, the infrastructure operator of Austria’s railways, according to an order received in July 2022, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.

Electric track maintenance machines

These track maintenance machines are equipped with the E³ electric hybrid drive.

The first machine, CatenaryCrafter 15.4 E³, designed for catenary maintenance, was manufactured at the company’s facility in Linz and handed over to the customer for field trials.

It is equipped with a lifting crane and a three-section lifting work platform. Inside the machine, there is a crew compartment where up to 11 crew members can be accommodated during transportation to the work site.

The ordered machines can be powered by the 15 kV AC overhead line system with a frequency of 16.7 Hz or by a traction battery pack.

They are capable of operating at speeds of up to 120 km/h and are equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS).

These machines will replace the fleet of diesel track maintenance machines, also manufactured by Plasser & Theurer, which have been in service for approximately 40 years.

In March 2023, Plasser & Theurer also delivered the first modular track maintenance machine built on the E³ technology (Unimat 09-2X-4×4/4S Dynamic E³) to Scandinavia.
