The European Business Association (EBA) supported the draft decree on a temporary ban on the export of ferrous scrap until December 31, 2022 (inclusive).

EBA asks the Cabinet of Ministers to support the ban on the export of scrap

Business believes that this decision will have a positive impact on the metallurgical industry, the economy of Ukraine, and will also contribute to the decarbonization process.

This is reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply.

“A temporary export restriction is being introduced, including on the basis of environmental considerations. So, each ton of recycled scrap reduces CO2 emissions by 1.5 tons, the use of iron ore – by 1.4 tons and coal – by 740 kg, and also requires only 1/3 of energy consumption, compared to the production of steel from natural materials,” – EBA analysts.

According to experts, for Ukrainian metallurgists, such results are of particular importance in the context of the expected implementation of the CBAM mechanism, the costs of which can reach € 628.3 million annually.

Recall that since the beginning of 2021, Ukrzaliznytsia has held 43 successful auctions for the sale of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap. In total, the company sold scrap for UAH 1.185 billion.
