Delay in Launch of Siemens Mobility Trains in London
02.07.2025
The launch of Siemens Mobility’s new Inspiro trains on London’s Piccadilly line has been pushed to the second half of 2026, although the initial plan scheduled operations for late 2025. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Transport for London (TfL) explained the delay as a result of technical issues discovered during preparations for testing the first train, which arrived in the city last autumn. As a result, test runs were postponed to this summer.

In addition, TfL reported the need to make design adjustments to the trains. These updates will apply to all 94 trainsets ordered from Siemens Mobility back in 2018.
The required changes stem from the capital’s outdated infrastructure, especially on sections of the line built nearly 120 years ago. This made integration of the modern rolling stock more complex.
Design and Features of the New Trains
The Inspiro trains will consist of nine connected carriages with full walk-through access. Each train will accommodate over 1,000 passengers and reach speeds of up to 100 km/h (62 mph).
This is Siemens Mobility’s first order for metro trains in London and marks a significant step in the modernization of the city’s underground system.
Train Modifications and Project Impact
The design changes will affect the entire production cycle. The manufacturer continues adapting the trains to meet the infrastructure requirements of the capital.
Despite the delay, officials remain confident in the benefits the new trains will bring. The Piccadilly line upgrade is expected to provide passengers with faster, more comfortable journeys.
