The new hub provides a state-of-the-art Digital Engineering Laboratory, dedicated engineering spaces, as well as a large workshop with main line access and two tracks with inspection pits. The hub is considered a center of excellence with the intention of speeding up the introduction of new railway technology.

The hub was created by DB ESG in reaction to client demand as its specialist teams continued to grow. The firm started utilizing its first 3D scanner and additive manufacturing system in 2018 to tackle parts obsolescence issues by maximizing the useful life of the current UK fleet.

Today, thousands of 3D printed parts have been manufactured for various railway customers. The expanded lab will allow the firm to handle more printers and offer rapid production or design cycle times.

Rail Technology Hub Drives Sustainable Rail Solutions

The new building also serves DB ESG’s Project Services Team, which deals with spare parts, modification projects, turnkey installations, as well as equipment repairs. The expanded workshops provide additional flexibility on project work.

Emphasizing innovation and sustainability, the Future Technology Team of DB ESG focuses on low-carbon propulsion and data systems. The firm is also working on the development of hydrogen technology along with carbon capture mechanisms for internal combustion engines.

Through engagement with Turntide Technologies, DB ESG is also working on improving battery technology for use in rolling stock. The hub enables the development, testing, and optimization of battery boxes for use in the UK’s fleet.

Nick Goodhand, Managing Director of DB ESG, stated that the Rail Technology Hub “represents our commitment to staying at the forefront of rail innovation, collaboration, and engineering excellence in the UK.”
