The new multi-element gas container (MEGC) supports both rail and other transport modes. It was developed by DB Cargo BTT in collaboration with Hexagon Purus, Endress+Hauser, Infraserv Höchst, and Fraunhofer IML.

The project was backed by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. The container holds up to 1,223 kg of hydrogen gas and ensures efficient, secure delivery.

It allows horizontal loading and unloading, making integration into logistics systems more flexible. Intelligent sensors monitor pressure, temperature, and vibration in real time during transit.

Previously, hydrogen was mostly delivered by road in cylinders. This solution reduces emissions and improves safety since rail is a more sustainable mode for transporting hazardous materials.

The new container was unveiled in June 2025 at a trade fair in Munich. DB Cargo plans to begin test shipments in real conditions before the end of the year.

DB Cargo Strengthens Its Hydrogen Logistics Presence

If the trials prove successful, the company will scale the project. This will support its decarbonization strategy and commitment to a climate-neutral economy.

DB Cargo emphasizes that hydrogen is a key energy resource of the future. This container enables safe integration of hydrogen into the transport chain.

DB Cargo Implements Digital Control in Cargo Operations

Smart sensors offer a new level of control during transportation. The monitoring system detects condition changes and allows immediate response to any issues.

Through this innovation, the operator contributes to greener logistics by combining technology, safety, and environmental responsibility.
