DB Cargo UK Introduces Innovative ETCS Training Hub in Doncaster

DB Cargo UK introduces cutting-edge ETCS training facilities at its Doncaster headquarters, setting a new benchmark for industry excellence. The unveiling on Thursday, 28th November, was led by Ed Akers, Industry Partnership Director at the East Coast Digital Programme, alongside Doncaster’s Civic Mayor, Cllr Julie Grace. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The innovative centre includes a Class 66 full cab simulator, six ultra-light simulators, two instructor stations, and modern training spaces. Additionally, agile breakout areas, study rooms, and a fully equipped kitchen enhance the facility’s functionality, underscoring its commitment to comprehensive learning.

The planning and construction process prioritized sustainability, utilizing recycled materials and energy-efficient technologies. DB Cargo UK emphasizes the importance of these choices, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to environmental responsibility and modern infrastructure development.
Training Professionals for the Future of Rail
Chief Operating Officer Neil Ethell highlighted the vital role of the centre in training rail industry professionals. “Doncaster’s rich rail heritage makes it the ideal location for our new training hub,” he stated. He emphasized that the facility’s impact extends to more than 600 drivers, 400 ground staff, and over 600 engineers.
DB Cargo UK’s investment includes a second training hub at Wembley depot in North-West London and a Mobile Training Facility. These initiatives aim to provide accessible, state-of-the-art training across strategic locations in England, Scotland, and Wales.
Ed Akers praised the initiative, stating, “Digital in-cab signalling will revolutionize rail freight operations, improving efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.” He acknowledged the importance of equipping professionals with the skills necessary for next-generation railway systems.
Funded through a long-term deployment program, the facilities were developed in partnership with the East Coast Digital Programme. This collaboration positions the UK rail industry to embrace future technological advancements while fostering a skilled workforce prepared for ETCS implementation.
