Cumilla train accident halts Chattogram rail movement

The Cumilla train accident disrupted rail movement between Chattogram and the rest of the country. Meanwhile, the disruption lasted until Sunday morning. Daily Sun reported that services resumed about five hours later.

Cumilla train accident recovery operation
Train services resumed at about 8:00am. Also, a rescue train reached the site and completed the recovery operation. It recovered the Dhaka Mail train. In addition, it removed the stranded bus from the railway track. That allowed normal movement to restart.

Mostafizur Rahman confirmed the return to normal operations. He is the divisional railway manager of the Chattogram division. At the same time, he said swift efforts were made to restore services.
Paduar Bazar railway crossing collision
According to bdnews24.com, the collision took place shortly before 3:00am on Saturday. It happened at the Paduar Bazar railway crossing on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway. At least 12 people were killed. Separately, eight others were injured in the crash. A Dhaka-bound mail train from Chattogram hit a passenger bus.
Police said the Mamun Special bus was travelling from Chuadanga to Lakshmipur. The train struck it at the crossing. After the impact, the train dragged the damaged bus for nearly a kilometre.
Injuries and hospital treatment
Fire Service personnel and Railway Police rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, they rescued the injured and sent them to Cumilla Medical College Hospital. Police said the bus may have entered the railway track before the collision. Still, the exact cause of the accident could not be confirmed immediately.
Mohammad Idris said three bodies were recovered from the scene. He is deputy assistant director of the Fire Service. In addition, police and local residents had already removed several others earlier.
Ajay Bhowmik said 12 people were brought to the hospital dead. He is a medical officer in the emergency department at Cumilla Medical College Hospital. Among them were a child and a few women. At least eight injured people are under treatment there. Also, many have severe head injuries.
Injured passenger Omar Faruk said he had been asleep before the crash. “After the crash, I saw the bus crushed. I lost consciousness and later found myself in the hospital,” he said.
