The CSX freight train derailed at approximately 3:10 p.m. on October 25 in the area around South Mountcastle Road and Barnetts Road in the area of Providence Forge. The company states that two locomotives and 53 cars of coal derailed.

-CSX officials confirmed that both of the locomotives released an unknown amount of diesel fuel. Crews were quick to apply containment measures to prevent environmental damage. No injuries were reported.
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were on site with CSX to observe the cleanup. The DEQ reported that the amount of fuel spilled remained under investigation.
CSX train derailment disrupts Amtrak Virginia service
Several freight trains as well as passenger trains that travel from Richmond to Newport News were stopped due to the derailment. Amtrak Virginia cancelled service to both the Williamsburg and the Newport News stops. The company organized bus service for affected passengers.
Officials encouraged travelers to check for updates through email notifications, text messages, or the Amtrak app. They also confirmed that work on rail restoration and environmental restoration is ongoing under federal and state oversight.
