This project was realized through a partnership with the Canadian company Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), announced last year.

Efficient and environmentally friendly diesel shunting locomotives from Express Service

The locomotive, based on a refurbished EMD GP40-2 model, underwent modifications at CSX’s workshop in Huntington, West Virginia.

This conversion was based on Canadian Pacific’s experience, which had already upgraded two locomotives as a demonstration of capabilities.

Key components of the original locomotive were preserved, including the frame, cab, traction motors, and trucks.

CSX President and CEO, Joe Hinrichs, expressed pride in achieving this milestone and emphasized the importance of sustainable development in the company’s operations. He acknowledged the contribution of CSX employees in Huntington, highlighting their skill and dedication.

This successful debut of the hydrogen fuel cell locomotive reaffirmed CSX’s commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in transportation.

Field trials will further evaluate the characteristics and efficiency of the new technology.

The partnership with CPKC paves the way for future sustainable solutions in railway transportation.
