CRRC EMUs and locomotives for Malaysia ECRL were officially completed on 18 November, CRRC Dalian has confirmed — a development also reported by Railway-News and one that marks a key step for the Malaysia East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project as it aims to improve connectivity between the country’s east and west coasts.

These new EMUs and electric locomotives are intended to provide the core long-distance rail capacity on the route.

CRRC EMUs and locomotives for Malaysia ECRL: intelligent control

For the Malaysia East Coast Rail Link project, CRRC Dalian has engineered its EMUs and electric locomotives with a clear emphasis on intelligent operation, dependable performance and reduced vehicle mass. Each electric multiple unit (EMU) uses a network control system with dual-redundancy protection that maintains continuous oversight of the traction, high-voltage and auxiliary systems.

As noted in a news release on CRRC’s official website, this setup enables real-time monitoring and millisecond-level fault diagnostics, helping operators quickly detect and address potential issues during long-distance rail operations.

Lightweight design and energy-efficient operation

To make daily service more efficient, engineers have adjusted the structure of the train bodies so that overall weight is reduced. The lower vehicle mass is intended to trim energy consumption in regular operation and, in turn, support more economical and reliable running along the ECRL corridor. Taken together, the EMUs and electric locomotives are configured to deliver intelligent operation and dependable performance while optimising energy use.

Visually, the CRRC EMUs stand out with a blue-and-white livery and ocean-wave motifs, giving the fleet a recognisable look on the Malaysia East Coast Rail Link. Additional graphic elements reference Malaysian flora and fauna, creating a visual connection with the regions the trains will serve and underlining the national character of the project.

Before any passenger services begin, the locomotives and EMUs will go through additional testing and commissioning. Once these stages are complete and the rolling stock has been shipped to Malaysia, the CRRC EMUs and locomotives for Malaysia ECRL will form a core part of the line’s fleet when the East Coast Rail Link opens for operation, a milestone also covered by Railway Supply.
